We’ve heard from employees who are receiving unsolicited offers of retirement counseling. How does VRS normally contact members?

From time to time, employers tell us their employees have been contacted by companies offering retirement counseling. Because all VRS members already have access to free counseling through VRS, these unsolicited messages can create confusion.

It’s important to remind employees that firms or individuals making unsolicited pitches are not representing VRS, even if they reference VRS benefits.

Employers can help protect employees by reinforcing how VRS and its partners communicate — and by promoting the free counseling and education VRS already provides.

How VRS Contacts Members

Share these key reminders with employees:

  • Official VRS mail is sent by U.S. mail on VRS letterhead.
  • Emails from VRS come from a varetire.org address.
  • Education and counseling opportunities are posted on varetire.org.
  • VRS does not make unsolicited calls to offer services.
  • VRS staff do not visit members’ homes to discuss benefits.
  • VRS partners with Voya Financial and Securian to provide free counseling related to defined contribution plans and life insurance, when applicable. Members may occasionally receive related email or mail communications.

Free, Flexible Counseling Options

VRS offers multiple ways for members to get help—at no cost:

  • One-on-one counseling by phone, online or in person.
  • Free retirement planning and benefit education sessions held statewide and at VRS offices in Richmond.
  • Live and recorded webinars available at varetire.org/education.

If an employee is unsure whether a call, email or mailing is from VRS or an approved partner, encourage them to contact VRS directly at 888-827-3847. Our team is always happy to help verify communications and answer questions.
