VRS Earns High Marks in Peer Comparison
VRS remains in the high-service, low-cost category compared to its peers, according to an annual study from CEM Benchmarking, which compares retirement systems in the United States and around the world.
- VRS’ total service score of 81 is in line with our peers.
- VRS’ total pension administration cost is $81 per member, below the peer average of $125.
VRS participates in the benchmarking comparison each year to identify opportunities to further improve service and reduce costs.
Retirement Education Seminars
VRS will hold several on-site Retirement Education Seminars across the state this fall. Designed for members within five to 10 years of retirement. These half-day sessions are open to any VRS member, and registrations are open:
- Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach, October 23, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
- Blue Ridge Community College, Weyers Cave, November 7, 9 a.m.-1 p.m.
- VRS Counseling Center, Richmond, November 18, 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

VRS Reports 9.9% Investment Return
VRS reported a 9.9% return, net of fees, for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2025. The strong return surpassed the actuarially assumed return of 6.75% and pushed the fund to a record fiscal year-end high of $122.8 billion in market value. The fund’s total performance met or exceeded board-established custom benchmarks for the one-, five- and 10-year periods.
myVRS Security Tip: Use Mobile Number and Personal Email
Employees can protect their accounts by claiming them, using a personal email (not a work email), and keeping their contact information up to date in VRS and all systems. Members can review security best practices in the VRS Security Center.
