Employees who become disabled may be eligible for disability retirement and other disability programs:
VRS Disability Retirement
VRS Plan 1 and VRS Plan 2 school division employees and political subdivision employees, who can’t perform their assigned job because of an illness or injury that is likely to be permanent, may be eligible for disability retirement. Also, some state employees not covered under the Virginia Sickness and Disability Program (VSDP) may be eligible for disability retirement. Hybrid Retirement Plan members are not eligible.
VLDP & Comparable Program (Hybrid Local Plan Employees)
Under VLDP, Hybrid Retirement Plan employees of political subdivisions or local school divisions are eligible for short-term and long-term disability, which provides income protection. Employers that do not offer VLDP must offer a comparable plan and continue to report these employees to VRS so that other benefits continue.
VSDP (State Employees)
Under VSDP, state employees, including members of the State Police Officers’ Retirement System (SPORS) and the Virginia Law Officers' Retirement System (VaLORS), are eligible for short-term and long-term disability, which provides income protection.
